I do understand what everyone is saying but I personally don’t really have a problem with it as it is. I’m ok with anything that makes the knife as cheap as possible actually.
I remember receiving a phone case a couple of years ago that came in a box with a magnetic closure and a bunch of expensive materials. You could just tell the packaging was very expensive. How much did all of that add to the cost of the already expensive Kevlar phone case? I’m mean it’s a phone case for crying out loud. They could have shipped it in a paper bag for all I cared. A complete waste.
I would also argue expensive display boxes/cases just self destruct on their own over time often. If they don’t completely dissolve they often age like milk and add nothing to the knife or other item. At least the cardboard isn’t going to shrink and crack. As a collector you will often pay more if the original packaging is with the knife so there are lots of examples of this on secondary market sites. Add climate conditions around the world and you see all manner of destruction.
Would you be willing to pay a premium on top of what already paid for your knife just to receive in more premium packaging? These knives specifically aren’t a numbered limited edition after all and they are quite inexpensive when compared to those that do come in the more fancy boxes.
I think everything is a balancing act with producing a knife like this. How complex the packaging is to assemble, does it need to be laser cut or can it be stamped/cut out, how can it be stored in the warehouse, how are they going to fit it into a production line effectively, etc, etc. These all contribute to the cost. I remember years ago the big argument for plastic bottles was the weight saving when compared to glass and how that affects the amount of fuel burned by companies trucks. It all seems like a few cents here or there but that’s thousands of dollars when it’s scaled up to production.
I’m becoming more aware or the environmental concerns when it comes to packaging. Even what class the waste would be if I threw it away. So that’s a concern for me now too I guess.
