OK… I'll try to explain.
First thing you need to know is that in 2006-2007, I didn't know much about Victorinox knives other than that I loved them and that I always had at least one 91mm and one 58mm.
Second, the way I was raised, if someone compliments (genuinely) something you have, you give it to them. It's kind of a cultural thing. So whenever a friend liked my Swiss Army knife, I would get them one because mine had a sentimental value.
In this case though, this person was so dear to me that I gave them my Explorer, thinking that I would just replace it, no big deal. I didn't know the "new" Explorer had a different magnifying glass, for example, and I didn't realize how much I loved my old Explorer. It just felt weird to hold that new knife (it was also red), so I thought, maybe if I get a black one, I would stop comparing it to my old one. So I got a black one, but that didn't solve my problem.
Long story a little bit less long, I decided to just get the completely different Cybertool, and I grew fond of it over time. That triggered the collecting bug in me… having 3 knives instead of 1. Before that, I used to get a SAK, use it for a while, then give it to whoever likes it and get a knew one… wash, rinse, repeat.
My Explorer was the only constant. I'm only realizing this as I type these words, but in a way, giving it up created a hole I needed to fill. I also learned then that Victorinox knives change with time, and that old models (or tools) might disappear forever. So yes, I've been collecting ever since, and now I have around 600, but I still miss my old Explorer.
