Just an update on this pocket clip from SwissKarry I picked up a week and a half ago. I really like it very much. So much that I already have a second one for another knife.
When I first saw these I thought they didn’t look like a very form fitting design. It turns out that’s this is a complete non issue for me after using it. When you hold the knife with the blade open it’s barely noticeable at all because it on the side of the knife opposite to your palm. That is if you are right handed, left handed you can feel where the clip mounts to the key ring loop.
It’s a very solid and stable design. It may not show very well but the way the clip is attached it’s machined to fit around the key ring loop perfectly. That’s how it’s actually held in position. It’s a spacer/mount that attaches to the knife and then the clip attaches to the other side of that. The tolerances for that fit couldn’t be tighter. The screw going through the knife only keeps the clip tight up against the knife, it does nothing to hold the clip from moving back and forth. That’s all done by that tight fit around the key ring loop. The clip is actually held in position by two raised pins that locate in holes on the clip. The two pieces are then held tight together by a screw. The brilliance of the design is that the screws are not the primary source for positional support. Holding the clip from moving back and forth isn’t their job. Screws work best when their only job is to pull and hold two pieces tight together. That is in fact the screws only job in this design unlike other clips I’ve seen.
The company does supply you with an extra Torxs head screw and also an appropriate L shaped wrench. You must open the cap lifter to install this properly on the knife. And by properly I mean tight. The only way I can see this clip failing is if it’s not held tight on each side. The cap lifter spring is actually supplying a slight amount of pressure to that key ring loop and squeezing the clip spacer/mount to the knife. It’s only noticeable by how much easier this spacer/mount fits over the key ring loop when the cap lifter is open. You can’t get it on unless it’s open.
You need to be careful not to over tighten these small machine screws. If you wiggle the clip and find any movement tighten both sides again. I have retightened this clip twice over a week and a half. Only the knife side had just slightly loosened. This kind of retorquing is totally normal. The screws do come with a blue locking compound on them. Just wiggle it around lightly to check.
