Packages and the inner structures made of plastics -or better: synthetic materials- such as foam, probably will detoriate much faster than cardboard. The plastizers, for example 'pftalates', may sweat out after time, which can cause serious problems (corroding, discolouring) with other synthetic materials and even with metals.
Cardboard is easier. It must be acid-free, as is also with the paint. Then it can last for ages.
