I feel the Emergency Tool perfectly suited for the job it was intended for.
In Japan they have a huge amount of natural disasters. Disasters of all types. I believe this was intended to be a tool set that was small enough to carry at all times. A knife you could buy every family member who does or doesn’t feel the need for a pocket knife. An emergency survival tool.
It’s all great to have a bunch of survival gear with you when something happens but that’s rarely the case. Think back to that tsunami/earthquake/nuclear disaster they had in 2011. People were left with nothing if they were lucky to escape. If you watch the old video footage people didn’t even have their jackets. Now consider you’re stuck on high ground somewhere and it’s snowing out and you don’t have a jacket. That’s exactly what happened to a lot of people. If you have this knife you can start a fire. Cut cloth into bandages. See your way through the forest well enough in the dark to find stuff to burn. Survival isn’t about food or building animal traps. Fire, shelter, water is all you need right away, for a couple of weeks actually if you aren’t hurt.
The name of the knife may be what causes the confusion. This isn’t for emergency workers. It’s a knife that’s small enough to actually have with you that will give you the most benefit if you aren’t a gear or knife person.
This whistle may look like a toy but it will carry farther for longer with less effort than shouting. Yes everything about this knife is a compromise. But they are all very useful too. If you were trapped under debris and help wasn’t going to be around for hours or days how long would you be able to shout for? As long as you’re breathing you have a chance of being heard by someone or a search dog.
If you needed to cut some scrap plywood to build a shelter or make a stretcher the wood saw on the knife would be pretty handy. You’re not going to be using the saw to cut broken branches in small pieces to burn. That’s the kind of survival training that I find quite silly. Find a V in a tree and use it to break branches. Who cares how big your fire is if you have the fuel. You do want to be seen by rescuers but also other people effected. You can keep feeding the log into the flame anyway. It’s about conserving your strength and keeping your risk of injury low.
Some of those people in Japan didn’t see rescue workers for 2 weeks. So I really feel that’s what this knife is for. Sort of the last resort knife. Maybe they should have called it that. You would greatly increase your chances of survival in an emergency survival situation with it vs without it.
This is a topic I have a lot of experience with so I can go on for hours about it. Sure training and experience are the best tools but I’m sure given enough time in an environment like that we could all discover some skills pretty quickly. This knife specifically would change your world at that point in my opinion.
