It's correct that pocket knives with blades under 6 cm lenght are not forbidden onboard of a airliner. However 'not forbidden' has a different meaning than 'allowed'. I checked the regulation for the Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol). Although the VX SD in theory is not forbidden, ALL security personel will confiscate a SD when found! They are allowed to confiscate EVERY item they consider a threat to safety, with NO possibility to file a complaint. So nailfiles, scissors, screwdrivers etc. can be confiscated.
Once at the KIEV airport my small Seber Tool (without any blade!) was confiscated. The other time I travelled out of Kiev I accidentally left my 'DAK 93' in the side pouch of my grab bag. On top of the knife was a small container with my deodorant of which the security man thought is was a pepper or CS spray can. I took it out of the side pocket to show it to him, and immediately I saw my DAK in plain sight. Luckily the security man did not see it!
When I travel -be it for holidays or business- I always have a pocket knife and a fixed blade knife or a multitool in the checked luggage. Never had any problems with that.
I don't travel much by airplanes. Airports are terrible places. Anyway, in my hand bagage is always a tiny, flat metal box with a lot of (prescription) medicines for 3 days. Underneath I put the small blade from the SwissCard, packed in aluminium foil. I flew half across the world without the blade ever been found.
