This week 32 people went into the Dutch Wadden Sea for a hike. At night! In my opinion this is rather stupid. I did the same hike once in broad daylight when I was a strong, healthy young man and it was an exhausting experience. ALL 32 people had to be rescued by helicopter! Some had hypothermia.
So be carefull even in Europe which is rather crowded.
My minimum list:
- solid hiking boots (I have weak ancles).
- hat, summer/winter.
- emergency rain poncho (cost € 1-2).
- water bottle.
- cell phone.
- key chain flashlight.
- pocket knife (of course a Vic).
- space blanket.
- adhesive bandage + small field dressing.
- lightweight jacket or fleece jacket.
- mini bottle with DEET (in summer).
The set fits in a small bag or even in your pockets. When I walk it is maximum of 2 hours, mostly in rural areas. But if you're unlucky and break your ancle you have to wait -immobiliced- for medical assistance, which could take several hours. Then you need the extra's like a space blanket or a fleece jacket.
