Elsinox Yes I know of Wake Island.
Mainly because of the Battle Of Wake Island in the 1940s but also because of the Vietnam war evacuations. This sometimes meant they were lucky and got evacuated to Wake Island. Sometimes they had to escape by cramming themselves onto any boat they could. It sounds wrong to say it now but these refugees were commonly just referred to as “boat people”. It referred to the fact that they were basically stateless at that point, without a country. They were referred to in the press as “boat people” even if they went to Wake Island.
Canada took in a large portion of these refugees at the time. I went to school with a number of them. These poor kids had just come from a war zone in an isolated 3rd world country. There was no internet of course and I doubt they had ever had an opportunity to see a move. They might as well have landed on Mars. They had no idea what they were suddenly dropped into. I can’t imagine how that must have been.
