WilliamR Yes the Trail Guide is a pretty cool knife. I used on as my EDC for quite a while. The only downside is it has the earlier file. I much prefer the modern file you get on the knives now if you plan to use it on anything metal. I was just filing electrical contacts and removing plastic mold lines so it wasn’t an issue.
If you do get a Mountaineer you might consider keeping it stock and don’t modify it just so you don’t void the warranty. I see the metal saw/file as a consumable tool that’s going to need replacing if you use it. There is no other option. That’s kind of why I picked up the Trail Guide. It’s a nice size to carry.
I go through quality metal saw blades like crazy in my shop so I have no illusions of what I can expect out of the one on my knife. Avoid using the saw to file anything stainless at all costs unless it’s an emergency.
I do prefer the metal saw/file to the wood saw. Everyone is different but I find it a much more usable tool in my day to day life.
