Today I went for a hike on some trails just up the road about 15min from my place. These trails are groomed cross country ski trails with lights, ungroomed forest ski trails and ungroomed snowshoeing trails. There’s been very little snow up there until about a week ago. Off the trails it’s a little less than knee deep. It was quite overcast but only lightly snowing. I saw one person skiing and there was only 2 cars in the parking lot. There’s enough snow to ski there after today I think.
Here is a link to some info and Webcams
I suspect this place is going to be really busy this weekend. It’s a very popular place.
So in honour of Karl Elsener and the Victorinox Community I decided to gift someone a new Victorinox knife. Someone I don’t know. I crudely wrote a note in black artist pen. It’s quite permanent. If I thought about it earlier I might have tried to find a better way of labeling the knife. I placed the knife on the back of a large trail sign in two ziplock bags along with some bright pink flagging tape. I’ve included the GPS coordinates of its location. It’s within sight of the main ski lodge. In the picture of my OneFold it’s the dark structure farthest to the left but around the backside. It’s a new Spartan. I think I’m going to hide a few other knives around in the future for random people to find in 2026. I’ll be sure to write Victorinox Community on them so maybe someone might think to google it and find us here.
I remember a few years ago I was at the Bonneville Salt Flats for something called SpeedWeek. It’s land speed racing. Anyway one morning I found a fist sized painted rock next to my tent. On the bottom there was a label from some local grade school. They were asking people to take the rock home or on our travels and send picture of the rocks in different locations around the world. The school children would follow along with each message that came in. I carried it back home to Canada and sent in a few picture of the rock then I purposely left the rock at a highway rest stop for someone else to find and carry the rock onto a new journey. I lost the link to the web page but this reminded me of that painted rock and the random future it had. I have since found one other painted rock like that but it didn’t have a web site link on it.
Thinking of Karl Elsener and his great legacy today.
